Jeju Island: Manjanggul Lava Tube 万丈窟

p1040116_副本Today I am writing a blogpost on Manjanggul Lava Cave which is one of my favourite tourist spots in Jeju (others are SeungSan Ilchubong and Teseum, click HERE and HERE to read more about the sites.)
  • Manjanggul Cave (만장굴) is one of the finest lava tunnels in the world, and it is honored as UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • A lava tunnel is formed when the lava that was deep in the ground spouts from the peak and flows to the surface.
  • Only 1km of the 13km Manjanggul Cave is open to the tourists. We took about 40minutes to finish the visit.
  • The inside of the tunnel sustains at a temperature of 11-21℃. According to my tour guide, you will feel chilling cold during the summer and warm during the winter in the cave. We visited the lava cave during summer, and it is so chilling in the cave. (*shivering*)

When lava flows in a tube, the level of the low if often recorded on the walls.
These features are called lava flow line.
Lava flow lines makes the wall looks like chocolate layer cake.

In Manjanggul Lava Tube, large and small passages occurs repetitively.

The large passage. (The ceiling is higher and the passage is wider)

The small passage. (The ceiling is lower and the passage is narow)

The shark teeth like features in the narrow passages.
p1040080_副本
The dome like topography of the ceiling in large passage is called “cupola”.
p1040087_副本
This is a Lava Raft that named as Turtle Stone, which is shaped like Jeju-do Island.
Lava raft is formed when the rock fragments from the ceiling or sidewall fall during lava flow and then
are carrying away by lava flow before settling and solidying at a certain location.

So, the best in Manjanggul Lava Tube is this 7.6meter high lava column and
here indicates the end of the lava tube.
p1040095_副本
A lava column forms when lava pours down from the ceiling to the floor and congeals.
Lava columns are found in many lava tubes elsewhere in the world.
However, this is the largest lava column known.
